Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is here. It's your once-a-year chance to review your current plan and make any updates for the upcoming year. Considering a new plan? Did You Know That November Is National Family Caregivers Month?

Since 1997, National Family Caregivers Month has been officially observed every November in the United States. It's a time to recognize and honor family caregivers — those who provide care and assistance to a family member with limitations due to illness, injury, or disability — across the country. Caregiving can be physically challenging and emotionally draining. Many caregivers sacrifice their own well-being to take care of their loved one. According to the Caregiver Action Network, you can increase support for family caregivers you know by providing respite care and checking in on them regularly. A thoughtful card or text message, or even a small gift, can show that you recognize their sacrifices. If you personally need help with home care and do not have a family caregiver, please reach out to me for details on short-term and long-term care options that can provide dignified home healthcare services.

Seasonal Wellness Check: Are You Ready For The Months Ahead?

Seasonal wellness check

As we head toward the end of the year, it's a good time to check in on your health, safety, and routines, no matter where you live. Even if you don't face snow or freezing temperatures, the seasonal shift can still affect your well-being. According to the National Institute on Aging, falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, but many are preventable. Since shorter days and changes in weather can impact visibility, balance, and home safety, you'll want to check to make sure that your walkways are well-lit and free from any tripping hazards. Also, possible storms, holiday travel, or just a busier schedule can make restocking your medications and household essentials more difficult. So, make sure you have a few weeks of supplies in advance to prevent any issues. Experts at the National Institute on Aging also point out that it's important to stay socially connected as the holidays approach. Especially if your family or friends are far away, regular phone calls, video chats, or community events will help you maintain a sense of connection. Whether you're dealing with colder weather, darker evenings, or a change in routine this time of year … a little planning can help you stay safe and in a positive mood all season long.

COULD THESE YUMMY CRANBERRY BRIE BITES BE EVEN MORE EXCITING THAN THE TURKEY?

Cranberry Brie Bites

It's right before Thanksgiving dinner and your guests are feeling a little peckish. These cranberry brie bites are the perfect solution! They always disappear within minutes, probably because of the delicious combination of creamy brie, sweet-tart cranberry sauce, and crunchy pecans. What's more, they easily come together in about a half hour.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (8-ounce) tube of crescent dough
  • 1 (8-ounce) wheel of brie
  • ½ cup of whole berry cranberry sauce
  • ¼ cup of chopped roasted unsalted pecans
  • 6 sprigs of fresh rosemary, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • cooking spray
  • all-purpose flour

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Grease a mini (24-cup) muffin tin with cooking spray.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the crescent dough and pinch together the seams. Cut into 24 squares. Place the squares into the prepared cups of the muffin tin.
  4. Cut the brie into small pieces and place inside the dough. (Leave the rind on to keep the cheese from spreading too much while baking.)
  5. Top each with a spoonful of cranberry sauce, pecans, and one piece of rosemary.
  6. Bake the bites until the pastry is golden brown, about 15 minutes.
  7. Serve warm. Makes 24 servings.
